NYA Holds Maiden National Youth Parliament Mock Sitting in Accra

Accra, Aug. 25,2026

Youth Authority partners with Parliament of Ghana to deepen youth participation in governance

The National Youth Authority (NYA), in collaboration with the Parliament of Ghana, has held the maiden edition of the National Youth Parliament Mock Sitting at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium, Parliament House, as part of activities marking National Youth Month 2026.

The initiative is designed to move young people from the sidelines of activism into the structured world of democratic governance and prepare them to understand, participate in and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Addressing participants, NYA Chief Executive Officer, Osman Abdulai Ayariga, Esq., said the Youth Parliament is more than a platform for speeches.

He described it as an opportunity for learning, questioning, deliberation, listening and active participation in democratic governance, exposing youth to presenting motions, debating ideas, respecting procedures, listening to opposing views and building consensus in the national interest.

"This mock sitting represents the first collaboration of its kind between the National Youth Authority and the Parliament of Ghana," Mr. Ayariga stated, noting that it should not be seen as a one-off event but as the beginning of a stronger institutional relationship.

He challenged the long-held notion that young people are merely "citizens-in-waiting," arguing that critical conversations on youth unemployment, education, technology, and climate change have for too long happened without youth at the decision-making table.

"Do not come merely because you are young. Come because you have ideas. Come because you have studied the issues," he told the youth parliamentarians. He also made a strong call for structural inclusivity, urging greater participation for persons living with disabilities.

According to the NYA, its mandate goes beyond creating economic opportunities to nurturing young people who are disciplined, patriotic, responsible and capable of contributing to national development.

Mr. Ayariga urged participants to ensure that all arguments, proposals and recommendations emerging from the House are properly documented and submitted to the NYA and relevant state institutions for consideration.

The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, who also addressed the sitting, encouraged participants to use the platform to network and build resilience against the inherent challenges of leadership.

The Mock Sitting forms part of a broader national push to institutionalize youth civic education, following Parliament's earlier Mini Kids Parliament initiative which saw 100 children debate responsible technology use and online safety.
