LAUNCH OF 2026 NATIONAL YOUTH MONTH

Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment Launches 2026 National Youth Month in Accra. On July 28, 2026

The theme for the event is "Rebuilding Values, Inspiring Patriotism and Empowering the Youth in the Digital Age"

The Ministry officially launched the 2026 National Youth Month, designating the entire month of August to empower, engage, and celebrate Ghanaian youth. 

The media launch, held in Accra, brought together government officials, youth leaders, development partners, and media to unveil a month-long calendar of activities aimed at fostering leadership, volunteerism, innovation, and national values among young people.

This event is "More Than Celebration , its  A Movement"
Chief Director of MYDE, Mrs. Emma Ofori Agyemang, said the month is central to the Ministry’s mandate to "coordinate policies and strategies that will make the youth responsible and globally competitive." 

“We have designated the month of August as Youth Month. This is a celebratory line of activities that reflect what the youth think and why we exist as a ministry,” she stated.

She was joined by heads of key agencies including Mr. Osman Abdulai Ayariga Esq, Director-General of the National Youth Authority (NYA).Alhaji Inusah Mahama, Deputy CEO of YEA (Operations) and representatives from the National Service Authority and Ghana Youth Federation.

A Month of Action, Not Just Festivities
Presenting the overview, NYA Director-General Mr. Osman Ayariga Esq
said this year’s celebration builds on last year’s scaled-down event due to national mourning. 

The 2026 theme, “Rebuilding values, inspiring patriotism, empowering the youth in the digital age,” he explained, responds to both the opportunities of digital transformation and challenges like misinformation, cyber insecurity, and substance abuse. 

Innovation without integrity cannot build a resilient nation. Knowledge without discipline cannot sustain development. Talent without patriotism cannot transform a society,” Mr.Ayariga said.

Key activities for August 2026 include:
Aug 1: National Volunteer and Community Service Day – nationwide youth cleanup, tree planting, and blood donation. National launch in Adenta Municipality.

Aug 2-7 Youth engagements with Christian, Muslim, and traditional leaders on moral values and civic responsibility.

Aug 10-13: National Youth Conference at KNUST Great Hall, Kumasi – featuring a presidential dialogue, masterclasses, and exhibitions.

Aug 16–19: National Youth Parliament mock sitting in partnership with Parliament of Ghana.

Aug 21: Inter-agency football gala at Accra Sports Stadium.

Aug 25: Intergenerational Dialogue with former leaders.

Aug 31: Grand finale at Independence Square – youth creativity, entrepreneurship fair, music, and anti-drug campaign.

Ghana will also host two major international events: the Thinkard Youth Drive: “Youth Agenda 2055” and the first in-person Pan-African Youth Parliament for Democracy.

Minister: "Invest in Our Youth Now"
Officially launching the month, Hon. George Opare Addo Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, described the initiative as “a declaration that Ghana believes in its young people.”

Citing challenges of unemployment, skills mismatch, and migration, he noted that nearly 1 in 3 young Ghanaians are unemployed and over 70% have considered leaving the country. Yet, he added, 88% actively participate in civic activities  “proof that our youth have not given up on Ghana.”

The Minister announced new interventions including digital skills expansion through Adumawura and the National Apprenticeship Program, completion of 3 new Youth Resource Centers with innovation hubs, and rollout of the youth Tracker platform and YouthXplore app for jobs and opportunities.

He also launched a civic challenge: “Adopt a Drain.”
“From the 1st of August, for the next 30 days, let us adopt a drain in front of our houses. Let’s become ambassadors to keep our environment clean. Flooding is preventable, and young people can lead this,” he urged.

Call for Collective Responsibility
Both the Minister and NYA DG stressed that government cannot do it alone. They called on the private sector, civil society, faith groups, and media to invest in youth skills, mental health, and entrepreneurship.

The event was attended by youth influencers including Kaly Jay, Sadiq Dzata, AJ, DJ Cass, Benson, and Big Mike, who are expected to help amplify the campaign online.

The Ministry said the month will climax on August 12 International Youth Day ,with a renewed focus on building “ethical leaders, responsible digital citizens, and young patriots.”
