Police Record Seven Major Breakthroughs in Nationwide Operations - IGP Yohunu

Accra, September 7, 2026

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has announced seven major breakthroughs recorded by the Ghana Police Service following weeks of coordinated intelligence-led operations across the country.

Addressing a press briefing at the Police Headquarters today, the IGP said the Service deployed special intelligence teams to the Northern, Greater Accra and Savannah Regions and worked with various Regional Commanders to undertake targeted operations. All the operations, he said, were successful.

"In all, we arrested several suspects and retrieved weapons and ammunition among several other exhibits," IGP Yohunu said.

He gave updates on seven of the major cases as follows:

1. Arrest of suspect in murder of missing couple - Dr. and Mrs. Amwa

The Police have arrested suspect Abraham Awundok, age 32, in connection with the murder of Dr. Jesse Amwa and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amwa, who were reported missing in April 2016.

According to the IGP, investigations led police to suspect that the couple had been murdered. Following searches at their residence and other locations the couple were believed to have visited, and information from family members, their mortal remains were recovered and conveyed to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Investigations later established that suspect Abraham Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, had murdered them. The suspect also took their mobile phones, money and private vehicle and fled Ghana for the United Arab Emirates.

He was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice. On 10th August 2026, the suspect was deported from Dubai to Ghana by a team of investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the murder. The vehicle has since been recovered. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.

2. Robbery attacks on banks and bank customers in Accra and Tema foiled

The IGP also disclosed a robbery attempt on some vans at Labone, Accra. Following swift response by officers from the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP (SOA), two suspects were shot dead, one was arrested and one managed to escape.

He said in early April 2026, his attention was drawn to complaints from customers who patronize various banks within the Greater Accra Metropolis. Intelligence indicated a robbery group that monitored victims, used a master key to open victims' vehicles and in some instances broke into the vehicles. The group was also believed to be planning possible attacks on some banks.

3. Dismantling of robbery gang at Weija, Gbawe, Dome, Abokobi and Amasaman enclave

4. Five suspects arrested, 3 AK-47 rifles and 357 rounds of ammunition retrieved

5. Three suspects arrested in connection with robbery cases in Buipe, Tamale and environs; mastermind behind the Buipe Toll Market robbery and murder arrested

6. Police arrest gang leader and others in connection with robbery on the Enchi - Asankragwa Road; One pump-action gun retrieved

7. Five suspects arrested, 8 AK-47 assault rifles retrieved in separate operation

IGP Yohunu commended the intelligence teams and regional commands for their professionalism and assured the public of the Police Service's commitment to sustaining the fight against violent crime.
